Commonly used words / phrases: 

504 - The 504 Plan is a plan developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives accommodations that will ensure their academic success and access to the learning environment.

 

AIS -  AIS means additional instruction and/or student support services that supplement the instruction provided in the general curriculum and assist students in meeting the NY State Common Core learning standards.

 

Case Manager - A case manager is usually a special education teacher or another member of the IEP team. (This person may be a special education teacher who works directly with your child, but doesn't have to be.) The case manager is responsible for making sure your child's special education services and supports are in place.

 

ICT - Integrated Co-Teaching is a classroom in which a general education and a special education teacher jointly provide instruction to a class that has students with and without disabilities. Together, both teachers deliver instruction to ALL students employing a range of teaching strategies.

 

IDEA – The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law that makes available a free appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation and ensures special education and related services to those children.

 

IEP – The Individualized Education Program, often called the IEP, is a legal document under United States law that is developed for each public school child in the U.S. who needs special education. It is created through a team of the child's parent and district personnel who are knowledgeable about the child's needs. 

 

Resource Room - Resource room program is a special education program for a student with a disability registered in either a special class or general education class who is in need of specialized supplementary instruction in an individual or small group setting for a portion of the school day.

 

MTSS- Multi-tiered system of support is a framework many schools use to give targeted support to struggling students. You may also hear it called the MTSS framework, the MTSS process, or the MTSS model. MTSS is designed to help schools identify struggling students early and intervene quickly.
